Baseball Splits Monday's Doubleheader at Lehigh

Bethlehem, Pa. - The Navy baseball team on Monday split its doubleheader with Lehigh for the second-consecutive day at Goodman Field. The Mids pulled out a 6-1 victory in the day's second game after dropping the first one to the Mountain Hawks by a count of 3-0.

The teams split the four-game series at two wins apiece, as Navy also rallied for a win in Sunday's second game (6-4) after dropping the opener (10-5). Navy improved to 11-27-1 overall and 6-10 in the Patriot League, while Lehigh dipped to 23-16-1 overall and 11-5 in the league.

Navy is two games back of Bucknell (8-8 in the Patriot League) for the third and final spot in the Patriot League Tournament with four games to play for each. The Midshipmen travel to West Point, N.Y., to face Army in the Star Series Saturday and Sunday, while the Bison face Holy Cross on those same days. The Patriot League Tournament will be held May 14-15, at the home field of the regular season champion. Army currently sits atop the league with a 13-3 mark.

The Midshipmen were held to one hit in their 3-0 loss in Monday's opener, but responded in the second game by pushing across three runs in both the first and fifth innings to take a commanding 6-0 advantage. Lehigh doomed its chances to pull off the sweep by committing five errors.

Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.), Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) and Trevor Thompson (Kent, Wash.) each collected a pair of hits, while Thompson also added a run batted in.

All three led off the first inning with singles, as Thompson's drove in Hollins to plate the game's first run. D.J. Faldowski (Washington, Pa.) followed with a base hit of his own to move the runners up 90 feet, but an errant throw from left field allowed every runner to take another base as Hamilton came home for the second run. Thompson scored later in the frame on Ryan McGinn's (Arvada, Colo.) groundout to third base.

The Mids tacked on three more runs in the fifth, as Hamilton and Thompson each stroked a base hit and came around to score later in the inning on Lehigh pitcher Joe Raniszewski's throwing error. Faldowski scored the frame's third run on McGinn's RBI sac fly to left field.

Navy starting pitcher Jeff Lange (Springfield, Va.) earned the win (2-2) by pitching eight-shutout innings and striking out two while scattering seven hits.

The Mids will continue a week full of action Tuesday as they play host to Coppin State at 3 p.m., at Max Bishop Stadium. Navy will then face Georgetown Wednesday at 7 p.m., at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.
