DePaul may be leaning to Wainwright
DePaul's search for a new basketball coach could conclude by week's end, with the choice coming down to three or four candidates. Western Michigan coach Steve Hawkins was to meet Sunday on the Lincoln Park campus with athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto and other school officials. Richmond coach Jerry Wainwright is expected to have his turn today.
Lenti Ponsetto might interview one or two more, but sources indicated Sunday she is likely to make her choice soon, possibly as quickly as Thursday.
Wainwright, 58, is believed to be the preferred choice among some in the athletic department, and his emergence could be tied to experience as DePaul prepares to join the Big East Conference this fall.
Wainwright has been successful at North Carolina-Wilmington and Richmond, mid-major programs that have defeated power-conference teams in both the regular season and the NCAA tournament. DePaul officials are putting a premium on a coach who can make the Blue Demons competitive quickly in their new conference.
Another plus in his column is a recruiting bonus he could add if he brings Richmond assistant Gary DeCesare, the former coach at prep power St. Raymond's in the Bronx.
DeCesare joined Wainwright three years ago when he left Wilmington for Richmond. A three-time New York coach of the year, DeCesare went 286-142 at St. Raymond's and produced 30 Division I players and three McDonald's All-Americans, including North Carolina State star Julius Hodge.
At least one assistant position will be open with the departure of Gene Cross, the only member of Dave Leitao's staff asked to join Leitao at Virginia. Cross, formerly an assistant to UIC coach Jimmy Collins, was Leitao's recruiting link to Chicago and the Midwest.
Both Josh Oppenheimer and Tyler Jones are awaiting word on the next coach and their futures. Retaining one or both is considered important to stabilize the transition for the current players and to ease the concerns of incoming recruits Wilson Chandler, Jabari Currie and Rashad Woods.
