Indian River Community College continues Florida's one-of-a-kind Criminal Justice Program with the Law Enforcement Academy track and the new Fire Science Academy track, providing students an opportunity to learn the skills necessary to enter the work force upon graduation as an entry-level firefighter, sheriff's deputy or police officer, armed with an associate's degree.
Students in the Law Enforcement Academy track recently assisted the Martin County Sheriff's Office in locating a missing person. According to Elizabeth Finch of Fort Pierce, a second-year student in the program, "This is what we have been training for." Classmate Jennifer Krause of Port St. Lucie endorsed the sentiment of her 30 classmates, "This was the best experience ever."
Registration for spring classes is under way with day and evening classes being offered on IRCC campuses in Fort Pierce, Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Stuart.
In addition to the academy track programs, IRCC offers the opportunity to earn an associate's degree in criminal justice or fire science at your own pace. Ethical and Legal Issues for the Fire Science field is a new course offered beginning Feb. 1. Students will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. in this three-credit course.
A new Telecommunications Officer Academy will begin Feb. 20. This is a 232-clock-hour training course enabling students to become familiar with dispatching 911 emergency operations centers. Students will receive training in emergency dispatch communications, interpersonal skills, hazardous materials, stress management and employability skills. Students must register for all three courses: Telecommunications Officer I and II and Emergency Medical Dispatcher I. The class is limited to 30 students and will be offered in the evenings at the Indian River Academy at 5900 Tedder Road in Fort Pierce.
As part of the Public Services Division at IRCC, students interested in pursing careers in the legal field may be interested in courses in legal research, corporate and business law, contracts, and real estate and property law leading to careers as paralegals and legal assistants. Spring courses are being offered during the day on the Main Campus in Fort Pierce, and in the evenings at IRCC's other campuses.
Security Officer Training will be offered at IRCC's Northwest Center in Fort Pierce and at the Gifford Youth Activity Center in Indian River County. The 40-clock-hour program provides you with the training necessary to join the security forces in a variety of business settings including condominium developments and retail centers.
Indian River Community College's Chapter of Delta Epsilon Chi (DECA), a student business organization, will present the 25th Annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Main Campus in Fort Pierce.
