Dont know George Curry personally. Came close to meeting him a couple of times, but it just... Two sides to the man who b
Despite the lack of an introduction, though, do know that when Curry stepped down yesterday as the Berwick High School football coach, ending a run that started in 1971, the crux of his story could be told from a distance.
He won 387 games. Six times, he led the Bulldogs to a state championship. Thirteen times in the last 18 seasons, they have participated in the PIAA playoffs.
Curry coached Bo Orlando before he went on to a nine-year career in the NFL. Curry had Ron Powlus before he went on to break every passing record at Notre Dame. Curry had Jake Kelchner before West Virginia and the CFL did.
Neither can the status to which Curry elevated the Berwick program or the place it has carved out on the area, the state and the national high school landscape.
Outside Berwick though, the focus has been more on how Curry and how the Dawgs did it. Those stories have been told and re-told and now theyre part a big of the Berwick mystique.
On that side of the dividing line, football was a win at all costs proposition for Berwick, and the talk has always been about how far Curry went to makes sure that happened.
Running back Cody Hall was from Delaware. Lineman Gus Felder was from Philadelphia. Both starred with the Dawgs in the late 1990s. Both transferred to Berwick, just like two former Pittston Area students did this past season.
Did those four, and all the others whose eligibility was decided by the District 2 Committee over the years, go to Berwick on their own? Or did they go there at George Currys personal request?
George Curry is undoubtedly the most controversial coach in this areas history. Hes also the most successful. Maybe the point is that one couldnt gone on without the other, and that much success over that many years, comes at a cost.
Taking that into account, there are two facts that go beyond any controvery: (1) George Curry taught kids how to win; (2) George Curry got a lot of kids into college who never wouldve had a chance on their own.
