WAYNESBORO - Waynesboro High School senior Andrew Caron will play baseball at Campbell University next year. Caron, a catcher and first baseman for the Indian varsity baseball team, received an athletic scholarship to play for the NCAA Division I Camels.
Caron was looking at several different schools, including UNC-Charlotte, Saint Louis University and West Virginia, but ultimately chose the North Carolina-based Campbell.
“It's a little campus, a smaller D1 school," Caron said. “I'll have smaller classes, plus I have family down there. Also, the coaching staff and head coach Chip Smith really reminded me of our Waynesboro coaching staff."
“I wanted to try to sign early," Caron said. “Now the pressure is off my shoulders. I can work on helping the team try to win districts and states."
“I've always had a passion to play baseball," Caron said. “I love the game. You have to respect the game to go on to the next level."
“Coach Chandler has done so much for me," Caron said. “I have to thank my parents for traveling to all the fields and helping me get where I'm going."
Assistant coaches Gary Shatzer and Greg White have also made an impact on Caron. He said that Waynesboro athletic director Dan McLaughlin has helped him train in off hours.
“He is the perfect student-athlete," Indian coach Greg Chandler said. “He does well in class, he has a great demeanor and he's good on the field. He's what you're looking for when you're recruiting."
Chandler said that Caron has a great arm behind the plate, and is an ace throwing out runners. He also swings a mighty bat, batting in the cleanup spot in the lineup.
